EXPERIENCE

ASPEN SKI CLUB 1971 TO 1976 (PICTURED HERE 2ND FROM RIGHT TOP

PITKIN INDEPENDENT

I HAVE BEEN WORKING ON LOCAL ISSUES FOR DECADES.  I HAVE DEMONSTRATED DEDICATION, PASSION AND ACHIEVEMENT IN A WIDE RANGE OF VOLUNTEER, NON PROFIT AND FOR PROFIT ENDEAVORS.
I/VE BEEN CALLED "ONE PART DREAMER AND TWO PARTS DOER"; AND MY HISTORY OF CREATIVITY, TENACITY, DIPLOMACY AND ACCOMPLISHMENT SUPPORTS THAT.
DECADES OF EXPERIENCE THAT I WILL PUT TO WORK FOR THE CITIZENS OF PITKIN COUNTY:
PERSONAL:
  • Moved to Aspen in 1971 at age 12.
  • Aspen Ski Club and Aspen Junior Hockey kid from 1971 to 1976. AJHockey Dad and coach from 1996 to 2016.
  • Graduated from Aspen High 1976.
  • 1977 established main goal in life, that being to own a home in my hometown - Aspen.
  • Graduated from CU Boulder 1982 - Business and Political Science.
  • Worked in local Aspen restaurants like Arthurs, Andres, Ute City Banque, and Syzygy) from age 14 to 30.
  • Wife (Suzanne) of 28 years.  3 children – all born and raised in Aspen and AHS grads (2nd generation). Bo age 24, Coco age 23, and Chloe age 12.

POLITICS AND NON PROFITS:
  • INDEPENDENT - No party affiliation – Ever. I don't believe that ideas should be judged by the label behind the name. I have never joined a party to improve my chances to win office.  I am passionately Independent.
  • As non profit “SPARC” President, I successfully created public / private partnership with the City of Aspen and raised $7,500,000 to build the ARC.
  • Aspen Recreation Center Advisory Board Chairman 2003 to present.
  • Long time advocate for what I call the “Aspen Middle Class”.
  • Cofounded VOYC (Voice Of Youth Concerns) in the 80’s to try and establish a venue for young adults in Aspen to influence decision makers in this community and carry the issues of young adults like hosuig and jobs forward.
  • Active in local politics, advocating for young adults - both in employment opportunities and housing for 3 decades.
  • Graduate Leadership Aspen (1991).
  • 1992 candidate for Pitkin County Commissioner.
  • Long time proponent of complete and unbiased environmental study to connect Aspen's 4 ski mountains.
  • Writer of Letters to the Editor.
  • Participated actively in every Aspen Area Community Plan process and other boards and committees as a staunch proponent of affordable housing and solutions to the "Entrance to Aspen".
  • Worked with senior housing group to turn the old Aspen Country Inn into an affordable senior housing project.
  • 2010 Candidate for Aspen City Council – finished 3rd of 8 candidates - Skadron and Frisch elected.
  • 1995-2016 Coached over 25 youth soccer and hockey teams.

DECADES OF EXPERIENCE IN BUSINESS THAT WILL MAKE ME A KNOWLEDGEABLE AND EFFECTIVE ADVOCATE FOR THE PEOPLE OF PITKIN COUNTY:
  • I have long been a fan of Amory Lovins and his approach that if you want to do something find a way to assign a value to it. For instance, I supported the Rural and Remote process in the early 90's to limit development in the back country and was the first active trader in TDR market to "sterilize" many of those parcels.
  • I have been involved in the production of almost 100 Affordable Housing units up and down the valley. I am a huge advocate of Affordable Housing.
  • Cutting edge development strategies that respect the environment and fully mitigates for the impacts to the community.
  • I have particpated in the private sector in Renewable Energy development and economics (solar).
  • Water rights experience, from flood irrigation to wetland development and adjudication plans, to the sale of wetland credits. This is a strong interest, and I believe a strength of mine.
  • Experience with technical and legal documents associated with public/private partnerships, real estate and business.  I am not a lawyer and will never practice law, but it is helpful having experience in reading and understanding complicated legal documents.
  • Clean Water Act – I developed the first wetland mitigation bank in Western Colorado. This is another form of transferrable rights that allows a community to monetize it's "values".
  • I have land use experience in multiple jurisdictions on multiple levels in Aspen, Pitkin, Eagle and Garfield.
  • I study market conditions and have written business plans for hotels, fractional real estate, Affordable Housing, multi family, Multi use, and single family home projects.
  • I have directed Architectural Guidelines on multiple projects.
  • I have directed the budget formation in the creation of complicated HOA’s, I have a lot of experience in Capital Reserve strategy, calculation and formation.
  • I have paticpated in real estate development, large and small scale – Short term accomdation projects (fractional and hotel), subdivisions and Affordable Housing.
  • Pitkin County is about to build a new office facility and airport - massive development, I have real life experience that can help with those projects.
